Microsoft knows who uses Internet Explorer — and understands that those people aren’t always keen on big changes. Internet Explorer 9‘s updated interface could come as quite a shock to some users, with its compact address bar and in-line tabs. It seems, however, that Microsoft will add in an optional switch to impart a more IE8-style appearance.

The Internet Explorer 9 RC build is set to introduce a “show tabs below address bar” option. To activate the old school look, just right click on the IE9 tab bar and select the option from the menu. It’s a much more familiar look to the average IE user — all that’s really missing is the separate search box and address bar, but let’s hope they don’t separate the two. We’ve had enough of explaining to people why they’re seeing Google results when we asked them to go to www.typewhereitoldyouto.com.

This week, we’re running a series of keyboard tips and tricks that help you make the most of Windows 7. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

The taskbar seems like it was meant to be used with the mouse only; it’s a very visual thing, especially in Windows 7. But it turns out there’s a way to “switch” to the taskbar and then work with it using the keyboard only! Hit Win+T to focus the taskbar, and then use the arrow keys to cycle between the icons. Whenever the focus switches to an application that’s currently running, its Aero Peek pane will show up. To start an application that isn’t running, press Enter.

What’s nice about this system is that it takes your taskbar’s orientations into account: for a vertical taskbar, Up/Down will switch windows, while Left/Right would activate the Aero Peek thumbnail pane; for a horizontal one, Left/Right would switch windows and Up/Down would activate the thumbnail pane.

I often enjoy writing about minimalistic, retro-style time-wasters. You know, games that seem to come from a simpler time, when graphics was very basic, and it was all about speed and gameplay.

Well, RedRiot is one exception. The graphics here are nothing but basic, and accordingly, this game takes a while to load. Once it loads, though, it’s great fun. You’re a super-warrior floating around the screen with a jetpack, and each level is a “mission” with its own objective. You’re may be called upon to destroy a couple of radar towers, or perhaps several missile silos, etc.

As you go about your business, the enemy will try to stop you. At first, there are only tanks that roll around on the ground and shoot up at you. But fairly soon, you start getting drones that fly around the screen, shoot at you and do their best to make your life difficult.

There’s a shop at the end of each level, and you can buy extra damage, extra lives, improved accuracy and all sorts of goodies. This is a great game for when you want a time-waster, but not one that looks like it was made in 1980.
